Mountains & National Parks
This area is simply surounded by national parks, mountains, and wonderful scenery.
The Languedoc divides into two distinct areas, the plains of the Bas (Lower) Languedoc and the rugged terrain of the Haut (Upper) Languedoc, towards Provence and the Alps.
The Haut Languedoc is a sparsely populated, mountainous area, the refuge of successive waves of exiles and refugees over the centuries. It includes the Parc National des Cévennes.
To the west as you head toward Spain, one is greeted by the majestic Pyrenees. This outstanding mountain landscape, which spans the contemporary national borders of France and Spain, is centred around the peak of Mount Perdu, a calcareous massif that rises to 3,352 m. The site, with a total area of 30,639 ha, includes two of Europe's largest and deepest canyons on the Spanish side.
